Atukula (Poha) Upma
In the last post 6 Breakfast meals I had featured only the food images. Its been more than 4 weeks since I have posted those images. Offline activity is keeping me busy and has kept me away from the online world. This week I will be posting all the 6 breakfast recipes.
Today its Poha (called Atukulu in Telugu and Aval in Tamil) aka rice flakes upma. Very quick recipe that can be prepared in less than 15 mts.
Atukula (Poha) Upma Recipe
Prep & Cooking Time: 15 mts
Serves 4 persons
Cuisine: Andhra/South Indian

1 1/2 cups atukulu/poha, wash, drain and sprinkle 6-7 tbsps of water and keep aside for 10 mts
1 finely chopped large onion
3-4 slit green chillis (adjust)
large pinch of turmeric pwd/haldi/pasupu
1 tbsp chopped coriander leaves (optional)
1-2 tbsps roasted peanuts
1/2 tbsp oil
2 tsps lemon juice (optional)
salt to taste
For seasoning:
1 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tbsp split black gram
10-12 curry leaves
1 Heat oil in a cooking vessel, add the mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add the black gram and curry leaves and saute them till the dal turn slightly brown and a nice aroma emanates the kitchen.
2 Add the chopped onions and green chillis and saute for 4-5 mts. Add the turmeric pwd and combine.
4 Now, add the softened poha to the sauteed onion base and mix it lightly and see that no lumps form and it combines well. Cook on low flame for 3-4 mts. Add the roasted peanuts, salt and combine. Turn off heat, add a dash of lime and garnish with coriander leaves.
5 Serve hot with any pickle of your choice.
Note:
For variation, you can add grated carrots and green peas and garnish with grated coconut.
