Chinese Bread Toast

Chinese Bread Toast with black grapes

Chinese sesame toast is a quick fix breakfast and school snack. The only preparatory work – boil potatoes. Mash two potatoes, season with salt and pepper, add a few drops of soy sauce and vinegar and 1 1/2 tbsps for sesame seeds pwd. Butter whole wheat or brown bread slices, spread the mashed potato mixture and sprinkle sesame seeds on top. Toast on both sides till golden brown. Very tasty, kids love it and its calcium rich (sesame seeds).

You can also try it with sweet potato. At times I also add 2 tbsps of cooked mixed veggies to the mashed potato.

  2. What are cheeslings? the ones in the other quarter of the Snack box?
Looks good. I am a new one to oven toasting and baking stuff. What would be the essential vessels or foil paper sorts to be bought before indulging in such oven cooking? Suggestions please. I usually make puffs or cake in a large tray or foil paper and have a pair of gloves. Could we make phulkas in the oven if we do not have a regular gas stove?

Those are store bought cheeslings. The cheesling dough is made from flour, butter, baking pwd and cheese, rolled out into thin rotis and cut into thin strips which are further cut into small diamond shapes and deep fried. Tasty and crunchy!

The essentials, I’d suggest are a small and large square baking pan, one round baking pan, a pie baking pan, a bread loaf pan, a muffin baking dish, measuring cup for liquids and dry ingredients, flour sifter (jallida), a whisk, a measuring spoon set, spatula, wooden ladle, one medium and large bowls for mixing, a pastry brush and sheets of parchement/butter paper. You could also invest in a digital scale and an electric hand mixer which are quite useful. I should probably do a post on this. :)

To my knowledge, rotis can made in an oven using the broiler setting, more like a tandoori roti. For phulkas, I think the hot tawa is right and placing on direct heat on stove top to achieve a puffed up phulka.
